Loafing and lounging and self-congratulation

summary: the best ever!! especially this year’s vinarterta; commercial extracts vs. homemade; (click on image(s) to see larger views and more photos)

vinarterta I love the days after Christmas. After the flurry of preparations, we can relax. It’s wonderful to sit quietly in the living room drinking coffee and nibbling on goodies.

The vinarterta this year is the best ever!

Is it because we put in a tiny bit more filling? Or was it the home-made vanilla that our brilliant neighbour gave us? Maybe…

But I don’t think so. I think it’s because we were radical this year. We changed something on purpose. For us it was a drastic change, brought on by an omission last year. (continue reading )

Yay!! It’s Boxing Day!

summary: Favourite Days; A reminder to share the bounty;

pick up sticks © ejm2012 I love Boxing Day. Almost more than Christmas. There is no stress at all on Boxing Day. It’s strictly for relaxing.

Depending on the weather, after lounging over breakfast, we might go for a bike ride in the afternoon. Or play a few rounds of pick up sticks. Or curl up on the chesterfield to read a book while stock is gently simmering on the stove.

And when it’s time for lunch or dinner, we wander into the kitchen and raid the icebox. There are always so many fabulous leftovers from the nights before. Merry Christmas to All!

mantelsummary: Our kitten has grown up; feasting has begun; Merry Christmas to All!! (click on images to see larger views and more photos)

We had a spectacular day, riding our bikes across the city to have our annual Christmas Eve brunch of merriment and cheer, with long-time friends. The roads were clear – no snow here (yet) and the temperature was just above freezing. It was beautiful!

On the way home, we stopped in Kensington market to get Christmas chickens for dinner tomorrow night.

Then we raced home to set the table and finish the last preparations for the beginning of our feasting. I can’t wait to tell you about the fantastic Occitan beef stew we served tonight. But that will have to wait, because once again….

‘Twas the night before Christmas

angel Our cat (at least we think he is a cat…) has grown up. But not so much that it’s at all safe to put up a tree.

But this year as (please see last year at this same time) I mixed cookie and bread dough, wrapped presents, vaccuumed and decorated the house as best I could, I knew that Christmas is still Christmas without a tree.

We hung the stocking out of reach of the furry fiend. (We think…) But I sure hope that Santa can reach the stockings! And that furry fiends dressed in shiny black fur can’t….

Here’s to all having a very merry Christmas!!! :hohoho: :stomp: :hohoho: (continue reading )

Bread Baking Babes (BBB) :hohoho: December 2012 :hohoho:

I can almost hear Mum saying “It’s just like cake on top…”!

Apple Kuchen This month, Gretchen (Provecho Peru) chose the BBBabes’ task. And like last month, it is not at all a task. This Kuchen is insanely easy to make!

Sure, it might not turn out exactly as bread, but who cares? It’s perfect for a festive breakfast or dessert. (continue reading )
