The vinarterta this year is the best ever!
Is it because we put in a tiny bit more filling? Or was it the home-made vanilla that our brilliant neighbour gave us? Maybe…

Depending on the weather, after lounging over breakfast, we might go for a bike ride in the afternoon. Or play a few rounds of pick up sticks. Or curl up on the chesterfield to read a book while stock is gently simmering on the stove.
And when it’s time for lunch or dinner, we wander into the kitchen and raid the icebox. There are always so many fabulous leftovers from the nights before. The Christmas tablecloth is always still on the table and it’s a simple task to haphazardly place a few knives and forks at each place setting – there’s no need for the formality (as fun as it was) of the night before.

We had a spectacular day, riding our bikes across the city to have our annual Christmas Eve brunch of merriment and cheer, with long-time friends. The roads were clear – no snow here (yet) and the temperature was just above freezing. It was beautiful!
On the way home, we stopped in Kensington market to get Christmas chickens for dinner tomorrow night.
Then we raced home to set the table and finish the last preparations for the beginning of our feasting. I can’t wait to tell you about the fantastic Occitan beef stew we served tonight. But that will have to wait, because once again….
‘Twas the night before Christmas
But this year as (please see last year at this same time) I mixed cookie and bread dough, wrapped presents, vaccuumed and decorated the house as best I could, I knew that Christmas is still Christmas without a tree.
We hung the stocking out of reach of the furry fiend. (We think…) But I sure hope that Santa can reach the stockings! And that furry fiends dressed in shiny black fur can’t….

In November, one of my sisters phoned me, ostensibly to ask advice about an herb substitution, but really to brag that she had finished her Christmas baking. Yes. She said she had finished. WHAT a show off.
And it made me realize that another sister and I hadn’t made Vínarterta yet. We immediately set up a date and just before the end of November, the cake was made.
