Because this isn’t Wednesday, I hope you’ll indulge me as I speak out, rather than remain wordless. (Ha. You know me. I find it almost impossible to shut up.)

I was listening to the radio the other day and heard such disheartening news from Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank. Not only are food donations down but the numbers of people needing to use the food bank are rising.

There are so many empty bowls.

So, as you make your last minute preparations and fill your shopping basket with gifts and special food, please remember to add your gift of every-day food for the far too many hungry. (list of aid agencies)

And of course, the hungry on not confined to our back yard. Not by any means!

As part of the WFP’s “Billion for A Billion” campaign, Pim (Chez Pim) is once again hosting the annual Menu for Hope raffle to give you another opportunity to join the online billion. I don’t know how I managed to miss the deadline for donating a prize. (Well, I do know how I missed it; I didn’t see the call for entries until today….) But even without the prize I would have donated, there are plenty from which to choose.

Each December, food bloggers from all over the world join the [fundraising] campaign by offering a delectable array of food-related items for the Menu for Hope raffle. Anyone – and that means you too – can participate. For every $10 donated, you earn one virtual ticket to bid on an item of your choice. At the end of the two-week campaign, the tickets are drawn and the results announced on Chez Pim on Monday, January 18.

Donate to Menu for Hope 6 in support of the UN World Food Programme and good karma might help you win one. Once again, food and wine bloggers from all over the world united to offer up a list of these delectable items for the Menu for Hope raffle. We’ve got something for everyone.

Among the many Menu for Hope VI items that caught my eye, there’s a beautiful Herriott Grace Mortar and Pestle set made from Maple on offer (under normal auction circumstances, I wouldn’t let anyone else know about it, but given the cause, I can’t help myself). Do note that many items have shipping restrictions. However, there are also many items on offer that can be shipped world-wide. And of course, it could well be that the prize(s) that appeal to you are in your region and have zero shipping restrictions.

And where does the money go, you ask? It goes directly to the WFP’s project “Purchase for Progress” via First Giving. Each of the Menu for Hope sites has full instructions for how to bid on your chosen prize(s)
