The VGT Omnivore’s Hundred (meme)
I don’t fill out that many memes but I saw this meme “Omnivore 100: How many have you eaten?” on Katie’s (Thyme for Cooking) blog.
The list is from Very Good Taste on the 100 foods any self respecting omnivore should try at least once. Like to play along?
- 1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
- 2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
- 3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
- 4) Optional extra: Post a comment at http://www.verygoodtaste.co.uk/ linking to your results.
Okay, I’ll bite…
The VGT Omnivore’s Hundred:
- Venison
- Nettle tea
(I’ve had nettle stuffed pasta….) - Huevos rancheros
- Steak tartare
(Over-rated…) - Crocodile
(where am I going to find that in Toronto?) - Black pudding*
(had to look up what it was to make sure – won’t be having this again soon – really didn’t like the texture) - Cheese fondue
(Mmmm…) - Carp
(at least, I’m pretty sure I have) - Borscht
(Under-rated…) - Baba ghanoush
- Calamari
(I can never decide if I like calimari better barbecued or battered and deep fried!) - Pho
- PB&J sandwich
(There’s nothing quite like this, is there? I love PB&J sandwiches every so often – especially if the jelly is a tart one like crab apple.) - Aloo gobi
(Must remember to post about the fabulous aloo gobi we had not long ago!) - Hot dog from a street cart
(Bleah!! Why do people like these??) - Epoisses
(MMMMMMMMM….) - Black truffle
- Fruit wine made from something other than grapes
- Steamed pork buns
(while I haven’t crossed this off, I’m not overly anxious to try it. I get the impression they might be gummy.) - Pistachio ice cream

(I might have had “Heirlooms”, but just didn’t know… ) - Fresh wild berries
- Foie gras
- Rice and beans
Brawn, or head cheese*

(not the whole thing though; that would be madness) - Dulce de leche
- Oysters
(smoked and baked on the half-shell… I’m too squeamish to try them raw) - Baklava

(In googling, I found Marcella Hazan’s Bagna cauda recipe. I WANT this!!) - Wasabi peas
(Hated them! what a waste of wasabi.) - Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl
(I’ve had stew in a bread bowl but never had clam chowder in a bread bowl. I like the idea though.) - Salted lassi
(I’ve had countless lassis, but never had a salted lassi – that I know of) - Sauerkraut

- Umeboshi*
Abalone
(see #50)- Paneer
McDonald’s Big Mac Meal

(they do NOT taste just like chocolate! Not even close.) - S’mores
(my husband’s family calls these “Angels on Horseback”) - Sweetbreads

(Say what? After googling, not knowingly. Do people really look for this to eat it? Is it a dessert item? A digestif??) Currywurst*
(eeewwww!!!)- Durian
(I’ve seen it at the market. But doesn’t it stink big time?) - Frogs’ legs (never had the opportunity)
- Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake*
- Haggis
(It looks like our traditional Christmas poultry stuffing is similar, except it does not contain any offal or suet. I’ve not ever had an opportunity to try Haggis, but I suppose I’d try it once if it was offered.) - Fried plantain

Well that was fun!
Hmmm, only 71%. I guess I’m not a self-respecting omnivore (I thought I was!).
There is no way you’re going to get me to try the things I crossed off! Particularly the McDonald’s Big Mac Meal! That one is on principle. It’s my feeling that no self-respecting omnivore should ingest the McDonald’s Big Mac Meal. (I vowed never to darken the McDoors after having to endure Ronald McD conducting Strauss waltzes at a summer concert years ago….)
Paz, I haven’t forgotten about your ten photos meme; I just haven’t finished going through our photos, in an attempt to find 10 that are worthy of inclusion.

Wow! What an impressive list! You’ve tasted a lot.
LOL! Don’t worry about the 10 meme.
Paz
Weeell, as to the McDo meal… no one said it had to be recent did they? There was a time…
Well done, very advenurous. My problem with the hot stuff automatically eliminated about 7 on the list. I may be adventurous, but I also rather like this ‘living’ gig – staying alive and all that.
There were a few I would have added… like wild boar, kangeroo and ostriche on the meat side and escalivada, wild mushrooms, and wild greens on the veg side… (and white truffles)
I really should have said that I’d had equivalents to the McDo Big Mac meal. It’s just McD that I am not wild about. I’ve had countless A&W Teen burgers and countless Wendy’s burgers.
I’ve had boar in France but was it wild boar? But I’ve not tried ostrich or kangaroo. White truffles (check), Wild greens (check – nettles AND dandelions), Wild mushrooms (check), Escalivada??
(google google) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalivada OH!! I think I might be able to say (check) to that too, even though I didn’t know that it was called that and we weren’t intentionally making it (well, maybe I can’t say I’ve had it; we wouldn’t have added the tomatoes).

Wow – impressive! You are more of a foodie than me by this measure
Hey!! Just who are you calling a “foodie”!!
(I don’t know why I dislike that word so much) – Elizabeth
PS – I also still owe Paz those ten photos – mea culpa, mea culpa!
I have been to a couple of conferences in the US (Florida and Wisconsin), and “churros” have featured regularly in the hotel-buffet meals. I was excited to try them, having read about how wonderful they are (and hearing “ooh, churros” from a few others in the buffet line), and was horribly disappointed in the boring reality – dough extruded in a twisty shape, deepfried, then dipped in cinnamon sugar. I asked the locals if real churros were better, and they didn’t know what I meant by “real”. I reckon those churros were precooked and frozen and then probably microwaved.
I wonder if real churros would be as good as elephant ears (deepfried dough dipped in cinnamon sugar – sounds identical, but the dough isn’t extruded). Maybe if elephant ears were cooked, frozen, and reheated, they would be as awful as those buffet churros.
Haggis is delicious. I’ve had it a couple of times, once when I was playing a gig at a Robbie Burns party, and once in England for Hogmanay. I could only eat a very small slice – it has a “can’t eat very much at a time” quality I can’t find a name for – not quite richness, but something close to it.
I’m with you on the elephant’s ears (churros). They’re way overrated . I’ve had freshly deep-fried ones too and they are better. But mostly they’re just icky sweet and oily (but maybe I haven’t had great ones.
Now I really want to try Haggis. (I love mealy pudding, which must be similar to haggis.) -ejm
I only had 68%..I need to be try more Asian and East Indian foods
