Rats!!! Flat wild bread again…

Sigh. Today was supposed to be a fun day – making wild bread to go with the pâté and white bean soup (using homemade chicken stock) that T was making.

The pâté and the soup turned out fabulously. Of course.

And I, of course, just pulled the flattest loaf of bread out of the oven. I took pictures. They’re still in the camera.

I DON’T want to talk about it….

  • It’s actually pretty comforting to know some things don’t turn out right now and then. I’m so intimidated by many of the skills wielded out here in the homesteading community, when in fact I have had a considerable learning curve. Hey, your soup and pate were great! I’m still working on getting my bean soup to taste good :)

  • Wild bread is not supposed to behave right? Just pretend it was meant to be and enjoy that fab soup and pate. Hmm, I wouldn’t mind some!

    Thank you all for your comforting words. Surprisingly, even though the bread was flat and undercooked (in spite of reaching the correct internal temperature), it was still excellent with the pate and the soup.

    Still, I’m very very tempted to murder my starter and just return to using commercial yeast…

    Robbyn, I fear that my wild bread has only turned out correctly a very few times – I WISH that it had turned out correctly even “now and then” – that would be a huge improvement. ;-)

    I recently met a Canadian woman who grew up in a small community in northern Saskatchewan. She was born in about 1955, and remembers when they first got electricity, running water, etc. Some of these services were not available in her community until my colleague was an adult! Needless to say, her mother made her own bread, and she recalls when her mother became aware that commercial yeast was available. Her mother switched immediately.

    Hahaha! That reminds me of one of my highschool friends whose parents had emigrated from mainland China. She said that as soon as they moved to North America, they started using knives and forks instead of chop sticks. Her dad said that knives and forks were MUCH easier to use.
     
    However, I’m not quite ready to give up on my wild yeast. When it works, it really does make wonderful bread! – ejm
