We just got back last night after a holiday and I hope that even though this is two thirds on-topic and two days late, Jeanne will be lenient and consider this post for inclusion in the round up of

WTSIM… (almost) meatless barbecue!

barbecue wok When the announcement for this month’s WTSIM… fell, we were just preparing to travel to the other side of the country, to celebrate several birthdays and attend two family reunions. We had a wonderful time visiting and feasting, using borrowed computers just long enough to check email. Just before we left, we had the following feast, using the left-overs to make sandwiches for our no-frills flight west the next day.

We would have done a meatless barbecue as per Jeanne’s instructions; really we would! We were contemplating barbecuing squid with olives, roasted garlic and lemon in the barbecue wok but taking squid left over sandwiches on the airplane didn’t seem like such a great idea.

barbecue wok So chicken it was. And vegetables. Lots of vegetables! And buns. Lots of buns! Not exactly a meatless barbecue, I know. But I’m hoping that Jeanne won’t notice the chicken lurking on the plate under the basket of buns. Surely those lovely grill lines on the bread will distract her enough….

Here is what T did for the vegetables:

Potatoes and Peppers on the Barbecue

  • yukon gold potatoes, quartered
  • olive oil
  • red and yellow peppers, seeded and quartered
  • onion, sliced
  • rapini, coarsely chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • fresh basil


  1. At least an hour before cooking, wash the potatoes well – no need to peel them – and put in a pot with some cold salted water. Cover and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for about 10 minutes until the potatoes are almost done. Drain and put the potatoes in a bowl.
  2. Drizzle olive oil over the potatoes and toss well. Allow to cool.
  3. Seed and quarter red and yellow peppers; slice onion and chop rapini. Add the vegetables along with salt and pepper to the potatoes and toss to coat well with olive oil.
  4. Heat the barbecue to medium heat. Put the barbecue wok on the grill and dump the vegetables into the wok. Make sure to add all the oil!
  5. Stir the vegetables from time to time until the peppers and onions are done. Put the peppers directly on the grill if it seems like they are taking too long to cook.
  6. (Jeanne, please ignore this next part of the instructions.) If grilling meat, place the finished meat on top of the vegetables to let the juices of the meat flavour the vegetables.
  7. Add chiffonaded basil leaves to the vegetables at the last minute.

These vegetables are wonderful hot or cold. They are great in sandwiches or hamburgers.

Garlic and green beans work very well in the barbecue wok too. Please note that green beans should be parboiled first for about 4 minutes.

We served the vegetables (and chicken) with T’s coffee barbecue sauce. And I loved the addition of the rapini!! It didn’t turn to mush as I thought it might.

I still can’t decide if they were better that night or the next day in our sandwiches. However, I can say without any hesitation that airplane food has never tasted so good!

    Hiding the chicken behind a handy bread basket – that’s priceless!! And as inventive as I have come to expect of you :) The grilled veggies look fab and I can imagine you had *a lot* of envious looks on the plane the next day. So glad you could join in WTSIM and hope to see you again next month :)

    But I told you NOT to look at the chicken, Jeanne! :stomp: And yes, grilled vegetables are fabulous. We just recently discovered that barbecue wokked rapini and garlic alone are stellar. I don’t think I would want them cold in a sandwich the next day though.

    And grilled corn is great too – husk it and place the corn cobs directly on the grill. Some of the kernels get a bit caramelized. It’s really wonderful that way – slathered with butter, salt and pepper OR Indian-style with lime juice, salt and garam masala.

    I must say that I’m really looking forward to seeing the meatless barbecue roundup – I do hope that someone grilled corn!

    Oh, by the way, please note that smoked rapini and garlic are TERRIBLE! (Don’t ask…)
