From 11 to 20 August, 2006, the two eastbound lanes on Queen's Quay between Spadina and York have been converted into a temporary bikepath. The city spent a fortune to do this to celebrate their waterfront revitalization. We're hoping that the path will be viewed so favourably that it will become permanent - even if the amazing gate is dismantled....A grassy area covers one of the lanes and a flowered area covers the protective curb on the center streetcar lanes. The two westbound lanes have been converted into single lane two way traffic for cars.
On Sunday 13 August, we rode on the path and stopped at the York Street gate to take some photos.
The gate is a sculpture designed by Marc Ryan made from about 600 bicycles. The bicycles were obtained from unidentified stolen bicycles at the police yard and city stockpiles of bikes that had been abandoned on bike rings. After 20 August, the bicycles will all be returned.
