Two Canadian authors whose work I really enjoy are Helen Humphreys and Elisabeth Harvor. Both are getting stronger with each new work they publish. From the former I just finished "Wild Dogs" http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2004-10-21/books_reviews2.php
and from the latter I read "All Times Have Been Modern"
http://www.penguin.ca/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,0_0670044407,00.html
Both are powerful, original works.

I recently read "Leaving Earth" by Helen Humphreys. It had that most excellent of qualities: it made me slow down reading at the end so I wouldn't have to leave the characters.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
It's set in the 30's on and above Toronto Island. The main "on" character is a young girl obsessed with women flyers and the "above" characters are women flyers doing an endurance flight.
