Dispute Resolution - strikes in the public sector

I think that jobs in the public sector are different from private sector jobs. In the former, you sign on to provide an essential service. When you enter this sphere, it is my opinion that you surrender the ability to withdraw your services in any contract negotiations. If that option is odious to you, do not work in the public sector. I realize that jobs that are considered vital to all has expanded beyond emergency services. It now includes education, transportation, energy, law enforcement, sanitation, health care, and communication. I do not think that the old time "strike" should be available to anyone who chooses to work in any of these fields.
There are many ways to resolve disputes about working conditions; withdrawal of labour in these fields cannot be an option.

I should add that my posting my views on public sector strikes was prompted by yet another transit strike in the Toronto area.
