We rented "The Control Room" (DVD) last night. Talk about sobering!! Most of what was shown didn't really come as a huge surprise to me though. We really do have an advantage being in Canada and getting a slightly more well rounded news spin. I have a feeling that those people who ONLY watch CNN will be quite shaken and surprised.

Warning! There is some extremely disturbing footage in the movie.

For those who have seen the movie:
Spoiler (highlight to read):
Did you get the feeling that the Arab translator for Al Jezeera was deliberately MIStranslating things that interviewed Americans were saying?

I just read Ebert's review from your RT link; this sounds good. Thanks for the tip.

I don't recall seeing anything mistranslated. Since you had mentioned this, I actually looked for this when watching the movie. Perhaps my attention wandered? Can you refresh my memory about what you noticed?

I believe, in retrospect, that I may have been wrong here. It was after a westerner had been interviewed. The guy was a bit of whacko and the producer (?) of the radio program became very angry with the fellow who had chosen the interviewee.
I hope that made sense....

Ah yes, I remember this -- it wasn't an issue of mistranslation. I think the concern was with lack of credibility of the interviewee.

Yes, I think that is right. The reason I was confused initially was because I was fading right at that point of the movie. I just couldn't believe that a westerner would be saying such stupid things (silly me... I don't know why I thought that; the whole world is full of people with ridiculous prejudices.)

After seeing the film, and also hearing of a pretty conservative guy who said he had taken to reading Al Jazeera http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage, I thought I'd take another look. It is now on my regular "rounds" of news, right up there with my favourite:

ReliefWeb http://www.reliefweb.int/w/rwb.nsf,
AlertNet http://www.alertnet.org/,
IRIN news http://www.irinnews.org/
BBC world news http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/index.shtml
CS Monitorhttp://www.csmonitor.com/
AllAfrica.com http://allafrica.com/ (very good)
Politics Watch (Canada) http://politicswatch.com/index2.html

and a few regional services that I am following, e.g. sudan.net at the moment http://www.sudan.net/news/news.html

and sometimes:
International Crisis Group (excellent in depth regional briefings)http://www.crisisweb.org/home/index.cfm?id=2530&l=1
Arts & Letters Daily http://www.aldaily.com/
