We watched Apcalypto last evening. It turns out it's not a historical drama about the collapse of the Mayan civilization but a simply-plotted action violence story with fabulous costumes and make-up, amazing sets and beautiful jungle. Its unrelenting and extreme action violence is very exciting, but it's over the top. I enjoyed the acting of the protagonist characters. But all in all, we were disappointed in the film, because it was pretty two dimensional (good guys and bad guys). The good guys have some humanity and character, but the bad guys are caricatured. There is nothing to anchor the story within the history of Mayan civilization, and some aspects of the plot are unfortunately anachronistic.

It has an "18A" rating for violence including gender-based violence, and I would not recommend it for kids. I'd recommend family viewing with teenagers and would want to discuss some of the controversies about the film. However, without discussion of the critiques, I am not of the view that this film has any "socially redeeming value." I hope no one perceives any spoilers here -- but I want to alert people to the fact that there is a fair bit of controversy over historical inaccuracies of the film. Some of the controversies are set out at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypto#Critical_reception.

I saw the movie a couple of months ago. I had no idea what it was about before watching it other than the trailer which showed a violent action movie set in a Mayan/Inca society. I agree with CAM that the characters are two dimensional and everyone is either a "good guy" or "bad guy" but that sums up most Hollywood movies. I watched this movie in the same way I would watch a Disney movie, never expecting historical accuracy. (Historians should never watch Anastasia or Pocahontas). I'd say Apocalypto is a watchable, high-paced action movie but remember the 18A certificate is there for a reason.
