As a fan of Donna Leon's Venice series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Leon
I was really happy to recently discover another writer of mysteries who is both an excellent writer and someone who infuses her novels with local Italian culture; in her case this is Florence. Unhappily, just as I "found" her and looked forward to the continuation of this series, I discovered that she died last year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdalen_Nabb. Still, she left us with over a dozen books well worth seeking out.

Thank you for the reminder to read the rest of Donna Leon's Venice series! I have only read one so far (lucky me) and am now headed to the library to put her second book in the series on hold.

Also, thanks for the tip about Magdalen Nabb.

I think I live with one of Donna Leon's biggest fans. We had to visit Italy last year and the year before. I wouldn't be surprised if we went again this year.

David, tell your Donna Leon fan to read Magdalen Nabb's Firenze series; not identical, but equally appealing.
