Some months ago I had general anaesthesia for the first time. It was quite unlike sleep where all kinds of things are going on; it was what I imagine death is like - nothingness. It was as if I had died (it only lasted for 30 min, I'm told). It made me think; how can I possibly worry about the "impression" I made while living? There will be people who remember some kind deed or a good act. So?

I thought about the things left behind; how important are they?

Is this a common train of thought among forum members?

I share your point of view MEF. How I'll be remembered has no effect on how I live my life. Wanting any sort of legacy seems like vanity.

I find I do care about what people I know will think of me. (I don't really care about whether I'm remembered eons from now by perfect strangers though.)

I lie awake nights (not really) thinking about what would happen if I suddenly keeled over and people found out what the wall behind the fridge really looks like and how they would shriek "eewwwwww, how could ANYONE live that way?!"

But is it enough for me to change the way I live and to wrestle with the fridge to pull it out to clean that wall? Not really.... skip
