Cozonac - Romanian Festive Braid

April 2015

This yeasted sweet bread is traditionally made for any festive occasion, especially at Easter and Christmas. It is made with eggs, milk, butter and lemon zest in the dough and filled with sweet cheese, nuts or - as in this case here - poppy seeds, currants, rum and honey.

Each rope of the braid is filled with poppy seed and honey mixture. When the bread is sliced, the pattern is interesting. (Am I the only one who thinks the bread is laughing?)

We toasted it and served it with butter and café au lait. What a delicious breakfast! (The rum flavour was not at all apparent.)
