This month's BBB recipe is rich rich rich. It was all about eggs and butter. And at the end of the recipe was a cautionary note "you will need a food processor with a dough hook attachment". But we don't have a food processor with a dough hook, so I followed Richard Bertinet's excellent "hand-kneading sweet dough" video instructions on the Gourmet.com website.
It might look a tiny bit dark, but there wasn't even a hint of scorching either in the fabulous aroma or the flavour.
The custard was wonderfully lemony - not eggy at all. It tasted very much like lemon butter.
It was great for dessert in the evening. It was equally wonderful with coffee the next morning for breakfast. Ah. There's nothing like a good shot of vitamin C!
I am not the biggest fan of custard, so I made only one gateau and decided to make plain brioche with the rest of the dough. Rather than making a braided loaf, I shaped it into buns. At first I was going to use the same shape as for Lucia buns but then remembered the charming bird-shaped buns I saw on eliseskitchen.com. Just before putting the birds into the oven, I brushed them with the small amount of filling leftover after making the gateau.
