Fridge Magnets

Santa Claus gave us these wonderful fridge magnets. Hmmmm... is he trying to tell us something? If so, it's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?

Magnetic Poetry

April 2011 June 2014

We have two versions of magnetic poetry: the original and the French

magnetic poetry

Here's the game that we devised: choose ten twenty tiles randomly and then everyone creates poems from the same words. Make as many poems as you like with the tiles. Use as many of the tiles as you like for each poem. Our only rule is that each tile can only be used once per round. We also frown a little on punctuation. The box doesn't provide it, after all....

Another very handy magnet is a digital timer with an incredibly annoying alarm that rings for a full 60 seconds before automatically shutting off.

Our Magnetic Poetry Rules

1 April

tiles: [bitter] [garden] [need] [rain] [s] [s] [summer] [sweet] [the] [whisper]

bitter sweet

the garden

needs rain whispers summer

As an April Fool's joke, I wrote "using the French tiles might be just the thing to help expand my vocabulary". Here are the randomly chosen tiles: [adore] [c'est] [doit] [femme] [grimace] [il] [jeu] [la] [moment] [nage] [parfois] [pâle] [peut] [plus] [sommeil] [sonore] [tête] [tourbillon] [trouble] [velours]

Being completely out of my mind, I made an attempt to make poems:

______________________________

jeu

il nage parfois

la femme grimace

moment

tourbillon

c'est plus trouble

adore doit sommeil

______________________________

tête pâle

velours peut sonore

Je suis certain qu'ils sont tres profound.... (cough)

2 April

randomly chosen tiles: [and] [are] [at] [butt] [chain] [ed] [er] [friend] [has] [ing] [leave] [ly] [music] [on] [sleep] [the] [time] [will] [wind] [you]

time has chained the wind

you are only sleeping friend

butter and leave at will

music

3 April

randomly chosen tiles: [beneath] [chocolate] [cool] [delirious] [elaborate] [frantic] [from] [it] [love] [lust] [mad] [mean] [no] [one] [peach] [repulsive] [sad] [shine] [then] [when]

frantic pɐɯ

one sad repulsive peach

then when beneath chocolate

     delirious

Thanks to http://www.upsidedowntext.com/ for helping to turn the [mad] tile over.

randomly chosen tiles: [bed] [cool] [diamond] [egg] [head] [ing] [is] [it] [languid] [mother] [must] [s] [sweat] [them] [they] [though] [to] [who] [why] [with]

7 April

randomly chosen tiles: [use] [rock] [yet] [tiny] [shadow] [y] [s] [and] [woman] [urge] [shine] [like] [picture] [an] [chair] [blow] [live] [next] [milk] [most]

tiny rocky shadow pictures

shine like milk

                                next

"bland" is formed with the and tile sitting on top of the blow tile (thanks to S and B for the idea to stick tiles on top of each other!)

9 April

randomly chosen tiles: [&] [&] [at] [behind] [blue] [chant] [did] [elaborate] [flood] [go] [music] [never] [s] [stare] [still] [through] [trudge] [weak] [white] [will]

I foolishly decided that I had to make a haiku with the tiles. Whoa! That was hard. Alas, I didn't quite manage to get in the obligatory nature references.

______________________________

trudge through weak chant

blues music never behind

elaborate still

I slipped in the reference to nature with the left-over tiles - too bad there weren't enough to make another haiku

Please note that "stared" is formed with the stare tile sitting on top of the did tile (thanks again to S and B for the idea to stick tiles on top of each other!)

And thanks once again to http://www.upsidedowntext.com/ for helping to turn the [&] tile over and form a virtual "8".

11 April

randomly chosen tiles: [always] [can] [decision] [dress] [has] [idea] [important] [future] [new] s[open] [or] [solution] [some] [take] [technology] [toward] [think] [vision] [utilize] [want]

The above tiles were taken from "Office" version of online Magnetic Poetry box (http://play.magpogames.com/)

Thanks once again to http://www.upsidedowntext.com/ for helping to turn the [has] tile over and form "say". Leftover tiles: [decision] [can] [utilize] [important] [idea]

16 April

randomly chosen tiles: [create] [electric] [empty] [grace] [imagine] [ly] [monument] [more] [observe] [pain] [shard] [s] [shimmer] [the] [then] [think] [use] [weld] [write] [young]

The above tiles were taken from "Artist" version of online Magnetic Poetry box (http://play.magpogames.com/)

Please note that when I chose to use "pain" in the above poem, I was thinking about this month's BBBabes' bread, the wonderful Dan's Garlic Bread. While the poem could work with the traditional meaning of "pain", I actually intended that it be read as the French word for "bread" (please also see the ode to Dan's Garlic bread)
