I volunteer to pick fruit for the organization "Not Far From The Tree", a Toronto organization that includes a residential fruit-picking program to pick fruit (with permission, of course) that would otherwise go to waste. I was very fortunate to be chosen to go with 5 other volunteers to a tiny backyard that was full of not one, but two cherry trees, both heavily laden with fruit. One a sweet red and the other a lovely cream with a red blush (I have no idea what kind of cherries they are - except that they are sweet and delicious).
We stewed a few in just a little sugar to see how they tasted. They were brilliant!
I can't remember what kind these cherries from last year's "Not Far From The Tree" harvest are. But how happy are we to have them? (I'm waiting anxiously to be one of the chosen pickers for THIS year's cherry tree harvest.) We're thinking these will be ideal for Cherries Jubilee. Or should we have them with faux Black Forest Cake?
