Assembly of first pie: bake pie crust; cook half the berries; uncooked berries in pie crust; cooked berry mixture poured overtop. (If strawberries are no longer in season, blackberries work just as well.)
The recipe said to put all the uncooked berries in the bottom of the shell and cover them with the cooked berry mixture. We decided that it didn't make the pie all that attractive. (There didn't seem to be much sense in going to the trouble of choosing the best looking berries if they were going to be completely covered...)
