About the Bread Baking Babes

Bread Baking Babes: Let's Keep Baking BBBabes’ Baking schedule . BBBabes and their websites . how to become a BBBuddy . BBB and BBBwB posts

We are a small group of friends from all over the world who love to bake bread. I am a newer member of the Babes, having started as a Bread Baking Buddy (BBBabewannaBe).

In 2008, Tanna (My Kitchen in Half Cups), invited a dozen dedicated bread bakers to join to bake bread together. And they did so – with gusto – challenging themselves with exciting new (and old) bread recipes. In July 2010, Tanna wrote the following:

Our intent has always been to stay small. But our goal has also always been to have some critical number that kept us all stimulated and involved and was also enough to keep you interested. Anybody who’s blogged very long realizes that all of us from time to time have to focus all of our energy and emotion on our family and job; blogging has to take a back burner. Right now a number of the BBBs find themselves in just that place. Nobody is being replaced. But … We invited four more to join us as Babes

I am very pleased to be one of those four new BBBabes.

Once a month we get together in one of our kitchens: chatting, kibitzing and laughing … maybe a little (*cough* or a lot of…) kvetching. And in spite of ourselves we get some baking done.

We bake the same recipe. But because we are only together virtually, we bake the month’s bread in our own kitchens, using local ingredients and sharing our experiences. You can read all about each monthly recipe by going to the Kitchen of the Month and see our takes of the recipe at each of our blogs.

Our group is always small at the outset of each month (there’s only room for so many in one kitchen) but in the end, we like to include everyone. And that’s where the Bread Baking Buddies come in.

Please join us! We love to learn from your experiences as well. Here’s how to be a Bread Baking Buddy:

  • You have until the 29th to bake the bread and post about it on your blog (we love to see how it turned out AND hear what you think about the bread) with a link to the Kitchen of the Month’s post about the bread.
  • E-mail the Kitchen of the Month with your name and a link to your post OR leave a comment on the Kitchen of the Month’s blog that you have baked the bread and a link back to your post.
  • The Kitchen of the Month will post a round-up of our Bread Baking Buddies at the end of the week and send you a BBB badge for that month’s bread.
  • No blog, No problem – just e-mail the Kitchen of the Month with a photo and brief description of the bread you baked and you’ll be included in the round-up.

Bread Baking Babes: Let's Get Baking

In 2011, as part of a BBB anniversary celebration, a new logo (below) was devised to replace this earlier one above ^^^. I do really like the new multicoloured logo but I must say that I love this earlier one as well that shows all the different loaves of bread.

Bread Baking Babes: Let's Get Baking
Here is the logo the BBBs used from 2011-2018.

Then, to celebrate 10 years of baking together, another new logo (top of this page) was devised.

»». I like the newest logo too but I have to admit that my favourite one is the first one that Lien created with the bread montage.

Late in 2010, BBB and Friends embracing the global fascination with FB, the BBBs created the group, Bread Baking Babes and Friends, to share their photos and thoughts on the various breads being baked. The only disadvantage to the group is that members must be logged onto their FB accounts in order to access the page.

Back in the beginning, Tanna wrote:

We are a happy little group with a passion for bread baking. What we share is a love for fun, baking bread and doing so together. Across country, across boundaries, across the internet. We are about the new coffee klatch in our virtual kitchens, the new over the fence talk taking place on the Internet, sharing knowledge, helping each other out.

The modern kitchen table may look just like grandma’s except for that laptop sitting next to the coffee cup. Through the magic of Instant Messaging all of us are chatting over coffee at the kitchen table, baking bread. All our different houses, all our different kitchen tables, same group. You know; a bit like these communities in Eastern Europe where all the women of the village bake their bread on one day, share the communal oven, meet at the hearth, gossip and teach each other, sharing their knowledge. Some of us have known each other for different times; some of us have even met in person. Our experience with bread baking may vary but we all share a great passion and fascination for bread at the moment. And so once a month you can find us together in one of our kitchens: yakking, baking and laughing … and with some bitching.

Same recipe, different kitchens, using local flour and sharing what we found. You can read all about our monthly recipe at the Kitchen of the Month, our individual posts to be found at our respective personal blogs.

At the beginning of this, we wanted to just be a small group. We love our Buddies and learn from them always. We do not aim to be exclusive or keep anybody out. We keep our group small so that we can maintain something I can only think about as a small town something; I don’t mean that in a mean way. I love New York and Paris and I would never want to be without them. It’s just that there is something in the small town or at a small kitchen table that can’t happen in the big city. I hope you will understand that.

If you would like to join us being a Bread Baking Buddy we would be so delighted. Here’s how:

  1. *You have until the 29th to bake the bread and post about it on your blog with a link to the Kitchen of the Month’s post about the bread.
  2. *E-mail the Kitchen of the Month with your name and a link to your post OR leave a comment on the Kitchen of the Month’s blog that you have baked the bread and a link back to your post.
  3. *Kitchen of the Month will do a round-up of our Bread Baking Buddies at the end of the week and send you a BBB badge for that month’s bread.
  4. *No blog, No problem – just e-mail the Kitchen of the Month with a photo of the bread you baked and you’ll be included in the round-up.
