Re: Obama's speech - A More Perfect Union
Here is the full version of Obama's March 18th speech called "A More Perfect Union". I was struck by how quiet and unassuming that speech was, and how it made the speech so much stronger than if it had been delivered in a more exciting and bombastic style. Also how it occasionally seemed ...

I don't think the analogy holds. I usually find that if I follow a recipe, step by step, I succeed. If the recipe is something completely new for me, like Thai food was 10 years ago, then if I follow say 5 recipes, step by step, I then feel like I have caught the general idea, and I can pretty much ...

Re: Foil and tendons
Question: What are "English-cut" short ribs? Here's a transcript of the show. http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/Season11/stew/stewromance.htm Blade, meat cut parallel to the bone, cut in half. I saw the show; the meat was in cubical chunks about three inches on a side. They looked just like ...

That's an amazing account of that farm where they cycle several animal species through sections of the pasture and each species contributes in some way to the health of the pasture and all the animals. He has a very vivid speaking style; I felt like I was watching the chickens rush out of their truc...

Rouille
I made something way outside my comfort zone for dinner tonight: rouille. Normally I wouldn't serve something even vaguely creamy let alone eat it. I had watched a Laura Calder cooking show where she made a fish stew and served it with toast spread with rouille. I was cooking fish tonight, and had a...

Re: How much is too much?
That's scary. The picture looks awful. I don't think they should have sliced a cross section like that. Or maybe they should indeed have made it look horrible so that nobody will try it. I can't get the grimace off my face :jump: But wait, there's more. She has a deep fried butter recipe. I'm never ...
Am I blind? I did not see anything about "Google Animation".

Hey, did they change the page? I'm _sure_ that yesterday, when I clicked on the Google Search button (not the "did you mean" link), I got to a page that listed several articles. I can find ...

Re: Supermarket "Beef"
Eating cows can be a wonderful experience, but all cows are not "created" equal. Yikes. Those two posts of yours, MEF, are enough to put me off beef completely. The antibiotics etc is very scariest, but I'm irrationally most put off by the chewing gum and chicken feathers. I guess having ...

Re: Peter Temple - a must for mystery readers
[Peter Temple's] writing is in the same class as Henning Mankell. Alas, I have not read any Henning Mankell, not being at all adept at reading Swedish. What English or American mystery writers might be comparable to Temple, MEF? I have read Henning Mankell in excellent English translations. I very ...

Re: See "Volver"
There are good movies, and there are ones which have the touch of greatness; Volver is one of the latter. Almodovar is a man who makes wonderful films; this is his best so far. I finally saw this movie. Great! I was a bit cautious because I had seen "Matador" by Almodovar, and hated it. B...

Movie: "Once"
I loved this movie - everything seemed just right. It has a 98% (!) rating on Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/once/) We found the Irish accents were sometimes a bit hard to understand, so we turned on the English subtitles on the DVD. Spoiler, don't read until after you see it. On on...

I have a palm pilot. It has one crucial feature that a PMA* doesn't have: alarms. It will turn itself on and beep when something is scheduled. I used to have a more hectic schedule, and carry it all the time. Now my schedule is more regular, so I rarely carry it, but when I need it, it's great. Mine...
