I like the forum. I don't suppose it's possible to put a newsfeed on the forum so that one can see whether someone has posted?

I don't think Facebook is replacing blogs at all, except perhaps personal blogs. In fact, facebook and twitter enhance the use of blogs through "Networked blogs" http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/ne ... cebook.php . Also, newsfeeds have enhanced the use of blogs. In fact, I think RSS feeds may be replacing email listservs -- although there may still be a place for lists for some time to come.

Facebook is good for real time chatting, too, although I have still not used it much for that.

I don't know if it's possible to put a newsfeed on the forum. I also don't know if it's possible to link it to facebook. But my guess is that if I add a newsfeed or facebook link, it might make the forum more attractive to spammers. The curbs in place now to block them are already working overtime and this forum is not all that visible.
So... have YOU backed up your files lately? And defragged too!?

Yes, the more links there are to the forum the more likelihood you will have traffic (and thus spam). One facebook alternative to this forum is a private "group" to which admission by the group administrator(s) is necessary. And I suspect one could have the postings visible only to the members of the group. I've had no problems at all with spam on facebook.

But wouldn't that mean moving this forum into facebook and making it private? I'm not prepared to do that. I want this forum to be available for anyone to read. And for anyone legitimate to join in order to join any discussion(s) here. If I move it onto facebook, it means I would have to first read the facebook TOS carefully to make sure about ownership of content. I'm not prepared to do that right now either.

(I only joined facebook to play the games - that I'm not even allowed to play - the jury is still out about whether I like the several other features of facebook or not.)
