On Monday, a leaving co-op student chose an "all you can eat sushi" restaurant for his going away lunch. I was a little alarmed since I don't really like sushi (brrr to both cold rice and seaweed).
But it was great. There _was_ lots of sushi on the table, but also lots of other things.(*)
The most interesting thing was the edamame - green soy beans. Apparently it's eaten like peanuts in Japan. The green soy beans are boiled in salted water for 3 or 4 minutes, then cooled and served at room temperature in their pods with salt on. To eat, you sort of squeeze the beans through the edges of the pod, picking up the salt on the pod. Click here for a picture.
I was a bit wary, since the beans reminded me of lima beans, but they are wonderful. Delicious, a bit crunchy, and fun to eat. And good for you (high in dietary fibre), I guess as long as you don't go crazy on the salt.
We got some frozen and just finished eating a little plateful for dessert. I think I cooked them maybe half a minute too long, but otherwise they were just like the restaurant version.
(*) The "all you can eat sushi" isn't a buffet kind of place; it's more like dim sum except you order from a menu and they bring smallish portions that the whole table shares (there were 10 of us). The restaurant rule is that you can have as much as you want as long as you eat it - anything ordered and not eaten is charged at "full price", whatever that means.
Much like blm, I tried these green soy beans in their pods yesterday; they were amazingly good. They come frozen - you just pop them into boiling water, drain and cool and sprinkle with a bit of salt - wow! Tasty and nutritious!
